Examine the quote “Understanding comes from humility, not from pride of knowledge” (Tamaro 176). What do you think it means? How does it apply to your life?

When I read that quote the way iItook it was that you learn things the hard way. You don't always learn things from the book, but from things that have happened to you. The way that I relate to this is that I learned the hard way not to depend on anyone else but myself. That is something you can't learn any other way besides going threw something rough. Ash Gordon
To me this quote says that when you are humiliated that you may understand better in your own ways and that if you try to be boastful about your knowledge....that that is only pride coming in and you dont actually understand it. Basically that when you learn...do it humbly and the right way. not prideful to get some where faster or higher.
This quote refers to the way we receive information. If we chose to listen to what someone is saying we can better process that information as opposed to thinking that we already know everything and refusing to listen because we already know it.I prefer to listen to people when they talk and gauge why the are saying what they say, reading between the lines so to speak. If you can understand the motives for a person to take the time to say something you get a much better idea as to what they want.
i understand this to mean that by realizing that one does not know everything, it is easier to understand more. when you get over the fact that you dont always have the answers you can more easily find them.
Well, I think this quote means that you can only begin to understand if you are not egotistical. You can understand if you are humble or modest. In this part of the novel, Tamaro is also talking about walking in someone else's shoes. So you have to think of others also. -Jenica
I think that this quote means that you are too busy boasting about yourself all of the time, then you don't have time to be humble and think about other people. You have to keep in mind that everyone dosen't know everything. You also have to listen to other people and respect their thoughts and ideas.
The way I interpreted this quote was that you do not learn how to do something from just reading abut how to do it, it is through trial and error that you will truly understand the way it works. This applies to my life by that I now know that I cant just read a book and know how to do something, I need to actually try and apply myself fully to be able to accomplish whatever it is that I'm trying to succeed at.
To me, this quote means that you need to learn things by experiencing it yourself, and sometimes making mistakes. You can't always pretend that you know everything, you need to listen to other peoples' ideas and opinions. No one is perfect and no one knows everything. Life lessons needs to be learned on our own, they can't be taught to us.
you have to fail at something to undertand it. You cant just waltz in and think you know it. you cant just learn it by knowledge. It has to be burned into your memorie. If something bad happens youll learn from it more than somone just telling you about it.
I believe that the qoute means folloow your heart. When you are haveing fun and makeing a fool of yourself thats when you learn not to make a fool of yourself. I think it applys to my life in no way. Idk why but i just cant see me useing that. Owell..........
I think this quote means you need to try to be understanding of other people and relize they might not know all that you know and havent learned the same life lesons. This also could mean that you need to think more about other peoples lifes in general and not just whats going on in yours.I think that i could apply this to my life by trying to be more understanding of how other people have different view points of stuff.
To me this quote means sometimes you have to accept your wrong and not let excuses get in the way. In order to know humility you have to take responsibility for your actions. This book has some pretty good quotes about life (Just throwing that out there).
This means that you need to learn how to understand things by experiencing them. Acting like you know everything is not understanding, you need to listen to other people and try new things out. You don't know everything. You need to learn lessons on your own. This may mean that to learn something you have to make mistakes.
I understand the quote as saying: if you are humble and observe the worl, you will better understand it. I f you get out and "pray on the street corner" then you are putting on a show for others to observe. So dont think you are better someone, listen to them and then make an opinion before you blurt out something to thier face.
I think this quote means that if you keep searching you will somehow find the answers. Also you dont know everything, which i can relate to this is that i dont know everything, but if i were to look up the information or seek help from some sort of souce to gain the knowledge id understand it.
This quote means that to understand life you have to know that you yourself is capable of making mistakes and your not afraid to admit to them rather deny it and act like you know everything. Just because someone acts confident and maybe even cocky doesn't mean that they understand. It applies to my life because I have learned from all of my mistakes and I take every experience with me through life to help. And I'm never afraid to admit to my mistakes.

The way I understand this quote is that you learn things the hard way. You learn things that happen to you personally not just from the book.
